Short news story about my soundslide project

John Chisham, who refers to as himself “John the Baptist”, and his fellow Baptist preachers visited Minnesota State University, Mankato Nov. 16.

Their speeches riled up many MSU students who were simply walking to or from their classes.

His speech targeted the MSU LGBT community, immodest women, feminists, anyone who consumes alcohol, Jews, Muslims and others he refers to as “so-called Christians” who do not share his interpretation of the bible.

Rev. Chisham often travels to campuses in the region with another evangelist, Shawn “the Baptist” Holes of Lake Placid, NY, who recently pled guilty to hate crime charges in Scotland.

The Mankato LGBT community charges that hate speech by groups like Chisham’s are a big problem

“When your speech is directly affecting other people, like when speech is trickling down into the minds of these other children who then go to school and make fun of kids who are different, you know that’s just enough to make someone do irrational things — like committing suicide,” said Mitchell.

It was the second time in last last two months Chisham and his fellow preachers visited MSU. Their first appearance of the year came earlier in the semester on Sept. 28.

Chapter 11 summary and reflection(to be updated)

November 14, 2010 Leave a comment

Ethics and legal issues of online journalism are basically complicated and not quite certain because it’s complicated and can be in various forms even though it’s still in its infancy. In the earlier years, online media were considered to be out of the legal and ethical regulation and consideration and I believe many service provider and users were reckless about such things. There are numerous things that are related to online journalism ethics and law.

The first thing the textbook mention is libel. Libel is a big deal because of the anonymity online and it was surprising to see how complicate it is. The issue include possible libel from comments made by users of online news sites. It’s important to put charge and responsiblity on organizations and their users, but more essentially, better and matured manner of using the convenience is requied.

Obscenity and copyright is other big issues of online journalism. They’re potential probelm of online materials  because it can be anyone or no one who see them. Contents provider might not worry about the problems as serious as they would if it was offline and the the open environment of internet will actually light up the fire to the fuse.

There were interesting terms and concept of copyright and linking which is also related to copyright issues. The underlying base of internet’s convenience popularity is its easiness to copy and share information. So it was very predictable that it would encounter copyright issues. So all the legal regulation and judgement comes in, but the rapidly evolving new media might not enable the legal tools to keep up with them. So ethics matter a big time, especially in online media use.

Weekend Assignment

At the first shot, it was nice that the reporter tried to give some sense of the place by panning, but the speed was not constant. When panning, the speed should be slow and constant and stop at the end, but the reporter failed to do so. The third and fourth shot passed by too quickly that I had hard time recognizing what they were. Things get too desultory in the fashion show scene and the person failed to catch and follow the models. There are so many bad framings. When following the models, there should have been some extra space following in front of the models, not their back space instead.

The video lacks in creativity and variety of the camera angles. However, considering the circumstance, I understand she couldn’t have various angles for the interviews. What I want to point out is that the interviewees were mostly cut above their neck. It should have shown the shoulder level of these people. Many scenes are shaky, she needs to use her both hands to avoid it. The last interview was done in a kind of shady place where it’s hard to see the person. Backlighting was a bad choice and it was hard to see the interviewee’s eyes. The music gets louder at the end, but I don’t wanna criticize it because I know it’s hard to find a place in such coverage. Those people are always busy talking to one anohter, so it’s really hard to ask them to move to somewhere else for an interview.

U.S. Hispanics stand out in longevity

Study shows U.S. Hispanics live longer

SKY BLUE – U.S. Hispanics live longer by more than two years and blacks by more than seven, CDC researchers say in a report that is the first to calculate life expectancy of U.S Hispanics.

The life expectancy report released Wednesday is the evidence of what  experts call the “Hispanic paradox” — longevity for a population with a large share of poor, undereducated members. A leading theory is that U.S. Hispanics are among the healthiest from their countries.

A U.S. Hispanic born in 2006 could expect longevity as his life expectancy is about 80 years and seven months. Life expectancy for a white is about 78, and for a black,73 years, which is less than U.S. Hispanics.

Researchers have seen signs of U.S. Hispanic longevity for years. But until recently, the government didn’t calculate life expectancy for Hispanics as a separate group. The new report of U.S. Hispanic longevity projecting future life expectancy is based on death certificates from 2006.

By breaking out the longevity of Hispanics, the life expectancies for non-Hispanic whites and blacks both declined slightly, said the report’s author, Elizabeth Arias of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

U.S. Hispanics are the largest, fastest growing minority, accounting for 15 percent of the population.

An estimated 40 percent of the U.S. Hispanics are immigrants, who in some cases arrived after arduous journeys to do taxing manual labor. It takes a fit person to accomplish that, suggesting that the United States is gaining some of the healthiest people born in Mexico and other countries, said Dr. Peter Muennig of Columbia University‘s school of public health who has studied life expectancy in different countries.

Compared to the estimate for all U.S. Hispanics, life expectancy is nearly two years lower in Puerto Rico, and more than four years lower in Mexico, according to World Health Organization figures.

Unprofessional Twitter Use

October 18, 2010 Leave a comment

Kim, Ju-ha, a famous anchorwoman of South Korea, has more than 140,000 followers on her twitter account(@kimjuha). She recently became furious on another twitter user(@Social_Holic) who twitted “there is a brainless person who keeps twitting pointless things such as “I’m here”, “Is there anyone drowsy?” Even though the user did not point out who “the brainless” is, Kim used to make such comments and declared she will litigate him regarding possible libel charges.

First of all, Kim surely is a good profession and does good jobs on her reporting. She doesn’t deserve such an offensive comment. However, she has to admit that her twitter use has been unprofessional. It’s her freedom to twit whatever she wants but as a profession, and as a power-twitter who has more than a hundred-thousands followers, she has to be thoughtful with her twitter use. No one really wants to hear such comments like “I’m here,” when there are hundreds of other things to read.

Libel in South Korea is quite different from that of the United States. But, If she was in the U.S. she would have to prove that the comment hurt her feeling and led her to emotional distress with physical illness or monetary loss. Since she’s a public figure she also should prove the actual malice, which suggests that @Social_Holic meant to hurt her by distorting the truth. Moreover, hurt of feeling is not something to find compensations for, but something to overcome. Most of all, I believe the comment might be harsh but it’s still fair in terms of free speech. I’m just sorry that a leading figure of today’s journalism is not capable of dealing with both twitter and follow-up reaction.

Corporation Identity of Sports Teams

October 18, 2010 Leave a comment

CI is important for sports teams because it’s not only for their public image but also for millions of people who’re going to purchase the related items. In that sense, creating and keeping the right CI will make it possible to satisfy the sports fans and build up strong and solid impression of the teams.

Some teams never change their uniform such as L.A. Lakers, Boston Celtics. Both teams are the best teams in the league that lead championship record chasing each other. If you have a look at their historical players such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who played in the 70’s, you’re going to figure out the uniform he wore is not so very different from the current one. Boston Celtics are even better at such consistency. It’s really hard to figure out the difference between the current Celtics Uniform and that of the 50’s. The consistency will help to build up reliable and firm image of the organizations.

Several NBA teams changed their uniforms and logos in recent years. They include Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, L.A Clippers. Especially the Jazz are apt to change their logo and uniforms often.

The Jazz has changed their logos and uniforms three times for the last 14 years, which suggest 4 different logos and uniforms for last 15 years. The changes were very major and it’s very hard to catch the common aspect in the designs. Such change will lead to confusion and less recognition.

Nevertheless, what’s optimistic about the recent change is that the team is trying to get back to the oldest one, unifying the images at the same time. The new logo and uniform movement seriously started in 2009 when they went retro with the old green and yellow jazz note uniform. Many home fans expressed their support to the uniform as they show up to the game wearing it. Jazz players also made some comments about their support to the retro uniform with the local media such as the Saltlake City Tribune. Greg Miller, the team owner declared that they will make some changes. The new uniforms and logo were publicized in June and they’re based on those of the 70’s which is the team’s first one. They also tried to keep the color set. The new color set which is navy, yellow, dark green will hopefully absorb the old history of the team that went too casual and made too frequent changes. Hopefully, the Jazz will keep it forever just like the Celtics even though I don’t like some of its elements. We just need some consistency!
