Change of Media and Journalist

Technology keeps developing everyday and it tends to require people to use it rather than to give options to choose between sticking to the old one and getting the new one. So nowadays media people are forced to have both traditional skills and understanding of brand new technology and trend.

It’s pretty clear that the emergence and rise of social media changed the way people get the information they need. So both public relations people and journalists are trying to adapt themselves to the new environment. Vadim Lavrusek’s post picks 1.Business Savvy 2.Programing ability 3.Open-minded Experiment 4.Multimedia Storytelling 5.The Social Journalist and Community Builder 6.Blogger and Curator 7. Multi-skilled 8. Fundamental Journalism Skills for “8 Must-Have Traits of Tomorrow’s Journalist”

I believe the most important one among all these eight traits is the third one because that trait will help the journalist get other useful skill sets as a result. Journalists should be prudent, but they should be early-adapters as well. The wave of changes are apt to come faster. So the best way to stay competitive is to be comfortable with the changes itself. Humanbeing would never settle down in certain lifestyle so journalist should be digital nomad.

It was a bit surprising that journalists with programming ability would be prefered because I never thought programming and journalism can be combined.

Another aspect to add is that the need for journalist who are expertised in certain area would be more lucrative. With online journalism and new media enviroment including social media, nowaday it’s extremely easy to reach people. Anyone can be a journalist and the only difference would be how good the quality and credibility of the service. People want some insiders, experts. People will choose who have extraordinary sources, solid writing skill and expertised view.

Don’t forget about the basics though like just being a good writer and editor. I also think #5 is very important in this every changing world of social media.
